Nagano Prefecture, where all Spring Drive watches are made, is noted for its mountainous landscape and the countless rivers that flow down the slopes of its many rising peaks. The resulting river valleys create lush natural environments rich with flora and fauna.
Among Nagano’s many rivers is the Atera, which carves a deep valley famous for its breathtaking beauty. The Atera is one of the branches of the Kiso River, and constitutes a Cultural Property as part of Kisoji, which is designated as a part of Japanese Heritage.
Grand Seiko presents the latest Spring Drive model in its Evolution 9 Collection, a new creation in high-intensity titanium with a dial inspired by the clear, emerald waters of one of Japan’s most beautiful river valleys. The dial’s deep blue-green colour and subtle pattern evoke the swirling waters of this famous river. In keeping with the Evolution 9 Style, the dial is punctuated by highly legible, faceted markers and a handset with a prominent hour hand, developed with careful consideration of legibility and precision.
The new SLGA025 follows in the footsteps of the popular, Lake Suwa-inspired SLGA019, which also combined the next-generation 9RA2 movement with five days of power reserve and a case and bracelet made of high-intensity titanium. This alloy is about 30 percent lighter than stainless steel while boasting a colour considerably brighter than other titanium alloys typically seen in watchmaking. The 40mm x 11.8mm Evolution 9 case with a low centre of gravity combines with the wide bracelet to create a stable and comfortable presence on the wrist that rises to another level thanks to the use of titanium.
The characteristically high level of finishing that has defined the Evolution 9 Style from the beginning is on display in this titanium creation. It is achieved through undistorted mirror finishing created by Zaratsu polishing and contrasting hairline finishing, each applied by hand, for a dynamic and sophisticated appearance that is no small feat to achieve with a metal as difficult to work as titanium.
The emphasis on precision manufacturing continues in the 9RA2 movement, assembled by hand and featuring an accuracy of ± 10 seconds per month (approximately ±.5 seconds per day) while providing enough power to function for five days when fully wound. The movement is also finely finished and can be enjoyed through the watch’s sapphire crystal case back.
With the release of the new Atera Valley-inspired SLGA025, Grand Seiko adds a new dial pattern, while honoring the natural beauty of the area where Spring Drive was born and where it continues to be produced.
The SLGA025 will be available at Grand Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners worldwide beginning in September 2024.
