Masao Kozumi is an artist who produces Japanese glasswork using traditional techniques that have been passed down since the Edo period. These deep navy blue artworks are just one example. The shape of these glass works is a hexagon that calls to mind the pattern on a turtle’s shell, which has been used as a symbol of longevity in Japan since ancient times, as has the turtle itself. Kachi-iro, a deep navy blue born from the use of cobalt, is sometimes referred to as katsu-iro, which has been recognized in Japan as a lucky colour that brings victory (Katsu means “victory” in Japanese). It can be said that finding something lucky in everyday items is particular to Japanese culture. Needless to say, the katsu-iro’s spirit abides in Grand Seiko, which uses a similar hue, Grand Seiko Blue, as its brand colour. Made of Ever-Brilliant Steel, which has superior corrosion resistance, the SBGH347 is an excellent choice for bringing something lucky into one’s daily life.
Mount Iwate is the imposing peak that can be seen from the Grand Seiko Studio, home to Grand Seiko’s mechanical watchmaking. In the dead of winter, one might encounter an icefall, a natural phenomenon in which water flowing downward gradually solidifies when the temperature drops below freezing.
